In the past month, the universe has conspired so that I meet incredible Dominican women.

From friends of friends to a simple tweet or Instagram comment, I have connected online and offline with women that have offered me something I didn’t know I was missing: To be listened to and deeply understood, and to see myself in a woman standing in front of me. These women, each of them in different stages of their lives and following very different career paths, have impacted me so much I literally got chills during our conversations.

Shifting seemingly between English and Spanish, something that fills my heart with immense joy, we’ve talked about spirituality, food, lifestyle, projects, and goals. We’ve bonded over things as normal as style and hair, to stories of how we grew up and what our mothers used to tell us.

Reconnecting with my culture and origins through meetings and conversations with women that look, think and experience the world like I do has been one of the most profound stages of my life. I’ve written before just about just how complex it is to be not from here and not from there, but the Dominican diaspora, especially the women in it, have turned this personal - and universal to all immigrants - struggle into something I am excited and eager to explore and unpack piece by piece and story by story.

I know I sound like a broken record, but I am telling something amazing is happening in our community. We now have a generation of bold, smart, educated and powerful Dominican women that slowly but surely are becoming and reinforcing their roles as the backbone of an awakening movement that will help our culture and stories become part of the mainstream American narrative.

If you also belong to the Diaspora and feel like you just need to be heard and understood, please don’t hesitate to reach out. One of the things I pride myself in the most is being a connector of sorts, someone that is not shy to introduce people and spark interesting conversations that can lead to anything from a delightful evening to wonderful professional opportunities.

Durante este último mes, el universo ha conspirado para que yo conozca increíbles mujeres Dominicanas.

A través de amigos de amigos o por un simple tweet o comentario en Instagram, he podido conectar online y en persona con mujeres que me han ofrecido algo que no sabía me hacía muchísima falta: Ser escuchada y completamente entendida. Estas mujeres, cada una en diferentes etapas de sus vidas y con carreras bien diferentes, tuvieron un impacto tan grande en mi que hasta se me erizaba la piel durante nuestras conversaciones.

Cambiando con mucha facilidad entre el inglés y el español, algo que me llena de mucha alegría, hablamos de todo un poco: espiritualidad, estilo de vida, proyectos y metas. Conectamos con cosas tan normales como estilo y cabello, hasta historias de cómo crecimos y cosas que nuestras respectivas madres siempre nos decían.

Reconectar con mi cultura y mis orígenes a través de reuniones y conversaciones con mujeres que se ven, piensan y viven el mundo de una manera similar a la mía ha hecho de este año uno de los más profundos e importantes en mi vida. Ya he escrito en el pasado acerca de lo complejo que es sentir que uno no es de aquí ni de allá, pero la Diáspora Dominicana, en especial las mujeres en ella, se ha encargado de convertir esta lucha personal - e universal para todo el inmigrante - en algo que me emociona descubrir pieza por pieza e historia por historia.

Sé que sueno como un disco rayado, pero te digo que cosas muy increíbles están pasando en nuestra comunidad. Somos una generación llena de mujeres Dominicanas con carácter, inteligentes, preparadas y poderosas que poco a poco estamos reafirmando y descubriendo nuestro lugar como líderes de un movimiento que va despertando la comunidad, y que ha ayudado a elevar nuestra cultura e historia a ser parte de la narrativa Americana.

Si eres parte de la Diáspora y sientes la necesidad de ser entendidx y escuchadx, no dudes en ponerte en contacto. Una de las cosas que digo sin mucha verguenza es que soy una excelente ‘conectora’ de personas y me hace feliz poder introducirte a personas y/o conversaciones que puedes llevar a cosas tan simples como una buena tarde o hasta tremendas oportunidades profesionales.
